Developing Discipline - One Writer's Approach

It was not too long ago that I returned from a holiday road trip to
find a gift parcel from a friend in the States. The gift was Stephen
King's brilliant publication "On Writing." I took to digging into the
book right away.

King remains one of the most disciplined workers in this business, so
his information and insight proved very valuable to me.

At the time I was still writing mostly political and opinionated
material while sending out very few freelance queries. I was a
first-year student and was finding as much time as possible, within
what little time I had to write anything that was not a school paper.

King's book, combined with what regular lunch-time meetings with an
inspiring local journalist, did ultimately assist me in formulating the
self-discipline I am still perfecting today. My fascination with how
people work continues. My intention in asking colleagues about their
methods is not to steal their work ethic. I would rather borrow
elements that I feel might benefit me and use them as ingredients into

Show Off Your Freelance Writer's Website

dot com for writers You know I firmly believe every single freelance
writer who is even remotely serious about their career must have their
own site promoting their writing. I mean, how else, this day and age,
are potential writing clients going to find you?

Writer's websites are in the air today.

Over at LinkedIN there's a group called The Freelance Writer's
Connection. (Search groups and join if it sounds useful.)

Several days ago Lisa Jo Rudy started a thread on writer's websites.
There are some lovely and powerful ones there. And there are some
interesting posts by the writers about their sites - why they have
them, etc.

I'd no sooner plowed through those when Carol Tice's newsletter came in
announcing a contest titled: Win a Free, Video Review of Your Writer
Website.

I entered with my own self- promo site, AnneWayman. You may want to
enter too.

I'd love to see the site that promotes you as a writer, or find out why
you don't have one.

Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.

ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
